The secret to sharing your porn addiction story

“How can I find the courage to share my story?”

Wednesday morning of this week, found me sitting on the set of “The 700 Club Canada” taping an interview about Strength To Fight and my own story of porn addiction and victory. (For those that are interested, the interview will air on May 11th). It was definitely a first time for me to have a whole camera crew and producers standing around while I shared my story.

The next night evening found me in front of 300 people, again sharing my story. And as usual I got the same question over and over again. “How do you do it? How can you be this open about something like porn?”.

The answer is simple. I believe my own talk.

Ok that sounds a little weird to say but what I mean is, I believe the statistics that I quote. I know that the truth is that for all the secrecy and darkness surrounding this issue, nearly every man, women, girl & boy I speak to has been affected by pornography in some way. So whether my audience is smiling, nodding, frowning, or angry I know that my story resonates. I know that nearly every single person I ever talk to has a story of being hurt by porn somehow. If it wasn’t them directly it was their spouse, or parent, or sibling, or child.

That’s why I can share my story with anyone. My friends, family, & strangers. My uber driver, bank advisor, & people I’ll never meet who see me on TV. Everyone has been hurt by porn. That’s my secret. I know that that is true and so I am able to open up to people and share my story.

So how do you open up to people about your story? Simple. Start talking. When I began opening up to people in my life for the first time, nearly everyone responded with a story of their own. If their pain wasn’t identical to mine, it was still related. So many people out there want to talk about it, but they are waiting to go second. They need you to talk the lead.

And if you do start talking to someone who truly doesn’t understand, well, you found that one person in our society who hasn’t been hurt by porn. Keep going, talk to someone else. Write to us. Me and hundreds of my friends understand. You can tell your story too.

Together, let’s drag this issue into the light.
