An open letter to porn

Dear Porn,

You’re going to lose.

Oh, you will have more victories. Of course. People will fall for your lies and your traps. I have been one of them. I know how easy it is. But I also know the truth. So do so many of my friends. Even the ones currently ensnared by you. humans were made for more than this and we are going to tell them. You don’t even need to believe in God or anything to know it.

Every child leaping off of a picnic table pretending to be Superman.
Every teenager holding a shampoo bottle pretending to accept an award.
Everyone who has picked up an epic book and imagined themselves the hero of the story.
Everyone who has watched a thrilling movie and felt a call to adventure.

Everyone who has cried over a mass tragedy.
Yelled at the TV over election results.
Who has read stories of the Holocaust and wondered if they would have been one of the brave ones who hid the Jews.

Everyone knows that humans are amazing, wonderful creatures, made for more than this.

But you
You tell people that everyone believes what you tell them to. This is a lie.
You tell people that we are nothing more than the sexual sum of our parts. This is a lie.
You tell people that even if we WERE more than what you say, we aren’t anymore. This is a lie.
You tell people to give up. To stop fighting. To accept your reality as their identity. These are lies.
You tell people there is no way out. There is. And me and my friends are going to show them.

Because human life is precious and everyone knows it. You cannot lie to us. It is intrinsic. When we hear of a mass shooting, nobody says “But were they great people? What had they accomplished?” No, we are instantly distraught. Because we all know human life is precious. And you are out there screaming that it is not.

No matter how much we lie to ourselves in order to drink your poison, we still know it in our heart of hearts. Human life is precious and we know it is true.

And while the fact that we chose to believe your lies in order to numb the pain, it doesn’t stay numb. And when we begin to feel, we remember that our very feelings, painful they may be, are proof that you are wrong. We are made for more.

You will lose.
