By Josh Gilman:

Recently the “WannaCry” ransomware virus began spread around the world, rapidly holding hostage hundreds of thousands of computers unless their user paid hundreds of dollars to the hackers behind it’s spread.

Lives were even put in danger as some medical facilities around the world were held hostage as the computers that they need to keep people alive were infected. It was a massive crisis in many areas, and is making entire countries rethink how they deal with future attacks and threats.

But Canada wasn’t all that affected. Why? Because the virus only attacked computers running older software that almost no person, or company uses anymore.

This makes me think of how we can either be prepared or not to deal with pornography affecting us or our children.

Ignorance is not Innocence

I remember talking with a Pastor who was sharing why he didn’t bring up pornography as a topic in his church. “A lot of pastors don’t talk about pornography because it’s something they are actually dealing with themselves”, he said. “But for many of us, we know that we don’t know anything about modern pornography and we are terrified!”.

To this Pastor’s credit, he had decided that staying ignorant wasn’t ok. We were meeting so he could learn about what is actually going on in the world. What are kids actually seeing? When a man or women in his church confessed porn addiction, what types of porn are they actually seeing? How is porn getting to people?

To many pastors, parents & teachers want to keep thinking that porn is still what it was in the 80s. That you have to go buy it to get it. Or that it’s like the playboy magazines of more than 30 years ago. They don’t want to think about how it is

accessible through every phone, laptop and xbox. They don’t want to think that what the people in their life, or their own children are seeing is violent, body-punishing & degrading sex acts. And this is leaving them vulnerable.

I remember a father who bragged to me about how he had never seen pornography, and he refused to learn anything about it because he was so proud of how pure his mind was. But he has kids. And they are growing up in a world completely pornified. He is not an innocent man. He is naive. He is purposefully ignorant. And his kids are in danger because of this.

Being Prepared

The people who work to protect our computers from viruses and attacks do much more than just try to build great computers. They are always trying to learn about how the attackers might be trying to attack next. The ones who keep the systems updated and stay one step ahead of the hackers are the ones who are safe.

How do be prepared and protect ourselves?

  1. We understand that we need a technical solution for digital problem. Porn can come at us or our kids from every single digital device we have. We use a Filter like Covenent Eyes. We protect our homes wifi through Kids Wifi or DNSThingy
  2. We understand that although software filters are important, giving our kids an internal filter is just as crucial and use resources like Good Pictures, Bad Pictures will help protect them from our pornified world.
  3. We understand that the pornographers are always adapting to new technology so we utilize organizations like Protect Young Eyes who keep updated reports on new websites, apps & technology and how we can protect ourselves.

We Pursue Freedom

The thing that was different about the “WannaCry” ransomware attack was the way it spread from one person’s device to the next. When I was addicted to pornography, my biggest fear was that I would be the source of one of my siblings being exposed to pornography and also becoming addicted.
